Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances
RoHS; 2002/95/EC
This directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in the manufacture and processing of electrical and electronic equipment and components. The purpose of the WEEE directive is to increase the recycling quota for electrical and electronic equipment. It has already encouraged product developers to think early in the design process about later recycling. The RoHS directive supports this objective by aiming to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals in the production process. The use of certain substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury as well as the flame retardants PBB and PBDE is restricted for nearly all electric and electronic equipment. The restrictions are to improve the recycling possibilities and as such to lead to further cost reductions for recycling. Furthermore, dangerous exposure of employees and environment shall be reduced in the whole product life cycle.
