Laser light – the new trend in automotive lighting

Laser light is the next step forward in automotive lighting. Laser diodes are particularly impressive due to the fact they are approximately ten times smaller than LEDs. In addition, these lights have exceptionally high luminance, which far exceeds that of existing light sources. In comparison to the current standard of LED high beam systems, Laser light offers up to a 20% greater headlight range. This opens entirely new possibilities for headlight design, which can be made even smaller than before in the future, without having to compromise on light intensity. Drivers will particularly benefit from the greatest range headlights can currently offer, which ensures better overall visibility and thus a higher level of road safety.

Laser technology is already on the rise among the large car manufacturers. Supported by OSRAM as a system partner, the BMW i8 was the first mass-produced car with front-mounted laser headlights to hit the streets. And BMW’s well-known dual halo headlights also shine in a new light in the new BMW M4 Concept Iconic Lights, thanks to OSRAM laser technology.
