Intra-luminaire, bi-directional interface

OSRAM DEXAL is a non-proprietary, intra-luminaire interface which is based on the DALI standard. It provides power and enables bi-directional communications between the OSRAM OPTOTRONIC DEXAL LED driver and the fixture-integrated component.

OSRAM DEXAL technology allows manufactures to create smart, connected fixtures using one interface supported by multiple light management systems (LMS).

How DEXAL benefits agents

As part of a response to a specification which includes smart fixtures, an agent requests an OEM to build a fixture that works with a light management system.

OSRAM: DEXAL marks a milestone on the way to the IoT. What advantages does the new street lighting interface offer you?

Anett Wagner: For years, the focus of technical and decorative street lighting has not only been on good, standard-compliant illumination of streets and squares. Special attention has also been paid to sustainability, safety and energy saving. In the simplest case, energy saving is achieved by means of a reduction circuit, but our customers – cities, municipalities, energy suppliers and civil engineering offices – are increasingly relying on more advanced control options. It is immensely important both for our customers and for Siteco as a luminaire manufacturer to maintain flexibility with regard to the control components that can be used. We see exactly this advantage of flexibility in the use of DEXAL components in connection with the future D4i Zhaga certification.

OSRAM: What added value does DEXAL bring your customers?

Anett Wagner: In the past, our customers usually chose a luminaire manufacturer for their control system because the control components were built into the luminaires. DEXAL technology in conjunction with D4i Zhaga certification loosens this tight grip. Thanks to the interface, users now have a wider choice of control systems and are no longer tied to a single luminaire manufacturer. This allows them to remain flexible when planning future street lighting.

OSRAM: Do you already install the new DEXAL LED drivers in your luminaires?

Anett Wagner: Among others, Siteco will install the DEXAL LED drivers in the Streetlight 11. The Streetlight 11 is the successor to the Streetlight 10 and already illuminates thousands of large and small streets, paths and squares in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and many other European countries.

OSRAM: When do you expect to see a comprehensive switch to radio-based systems that combine data from other sub-systems? Are there any differences between indoor and outdoor applications?

Anett Wagner: In interior lighting, building managers have been monitoring the lighting and other building systems such as heating and ventilation for decades. In industrial lighting, for example, there is a need to ensure lighting at all times to avoid production downtimes. There is also high potential for energy savings as the lighting is also switched on during the day. In outdoor lighting, the need for the extensive use of control systems depends on the application in question. If control systems are to be used, it is a deliberate choice after carefully considering all options in order to put the additional costs and the resulting benefits in a reasonable proportion.

OSRAM: In which application areas will DEXAL bring the greatest benefit in the future?

Anett Wagner: Above all, control systems are used in application areas where safety is the main concern and frequently changing lighting levels are required. In addition, the topics of containing the risk of vandalism, reducing light pollution as well as sustainability and nature conservation will have a significant influence on future purchasing decisions. The data obtained with DEXAL components will play an important role here.
